I noticed a few people talking about Ghost in another thread, and didn't want to threadjack, so I thought I'd just start a new one.

I've been using Acronis TrueImage for a few years now, and it rocks. Among other things, it lets you backup (and restore from!) networked drives. You can burn bootable rescue CDs (or DVDs) to do the restoring. And (here's a favorite) you don't need to reboot to do the backup, even for the OS drive. No idea how it works, but it does. Oh, plus incremental backups.

Anyway, that's all. Certainly worth looking into if you need a backup/restore solution.

You can do all these things with Ghost as well....BUT....what you only can do with TrueImage is backup of files or folder. I used to use Retrospect for that.

Oh, huh. When I switched to TrueImage, a lot of those things weren't possible with Ghost.

True Image is far superior than Ghost, on a side note: formatting DVD\RW is mandatory to backup to DVD, i don´t know what version of UDF it needs the DVD to be formated but only Roxio works for me, also sometimes it says an image is corrupted, most of the times is bad memory issues, it´s too sensitive with overclocking.

Not to disrespect, but my sister works at Symantec and I won't even take an NFR copy of Ghost.
I used Handy Backup Pro for a few years until I found TrueImage.
I can't live without it... that is, at least until something better comes along.

Other utilties I can't live without:
AvaFind Pro
File-Ex
HotKeyboard
Diskeeper
Folder Size
StartupMonitor & Startup Control Panel

I use a dual-boot system: one OS for music production, another OS for internet. Can True Image make a backup image of my full primary hard disk with both OS's and the little program I use to choose which OS boots? That would be GREAT

I tried Trueimage ahile back and it was a disaster. It totally destroyed by drive letter order and couldn't even reboot because it had changed C: to another drive. Had to do a lot of tinkering to get it all back and working. I went back to Ghost, never had a problem.

Animus:
I had that happen woth Ghost a few years ago i guess when you run it from XP, it creates a temporary C partition or something. I use Ghost in DOS mode all the time now with an old Win 98 boot CD.

I have a partitioned IDE drive for my OS.
TrueImage can (among other options) clone the drive exactly to another drive and everything will appear just as it was, including the master boot record
partition tables, registries, etc.
So I'm assuming that the answer is yes.
I've always liked the option of being able to use my backup files, rather than having them encrypted/compressed inside some locked file.

Mind you, Ghost does work for most people. I suppose it's just a matter of preference & personal experience.

Jeswa - thanks! sounds hopeful. Do you know if TrueImage can work with external USB or Firewire drives? The Ghost version I had did not..

It works with USB drives, I do not know if it works with Firewire.

And I too think that Acronis TrueImage is simply the best. I never had any problems using it.

Cheers

I tried to clone my OS drive with Acronis TrueImage and it DID have to reboot. At that time windows crashed and it scared me too much to retry. How do you clone without rebooting?

I tried TrueImage two years ago (I bought it !) and, after loosing a drive's content, switch to Ghost. Never a problem since.

I use Acronis it is not worth having an app like this for the cost of it

It feels good to know you will not have to spend hours or days reinstalling for the sake
of Twenty pounds or something.

BE WARNED NEVER TOUCH THE SERVICES WITH THE TRUE IMAGE NAME IN IT
OR YOUR SYSTEM WILL LOSE IT'S CONTENTS , I LOST THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF MY
C DRIVE AFTER DISABLING IT ONCE BUT OBVIOUSLY HAD A BACK UP I MADE A DAY OR TWO BEFORE
DO NOT TOUCH THE SERVICES THE APP GENERATES.
